The honest answer
Yes, and for a reason that does not apply to most boat trips anywhere else. The Blue Lagoon has no land route. Comino has no cars, no roads and a permanent population you can count on one hand. Every person you see standing in that water arrived by boat, because there is no other way to arrive.
The day, hour by hour
Bugibba, Sliema, Ġirkewwa, Mġarr or Valletta. Parking near the quays is the part people underestimate in summer.
On the big catamarans the upper deck goes first; on the small boats it does not matter. Bring a towel to sit on.
Depending on the port, twenty minutes to an hour of coastline: cliffs, bays and Malta from the angle you cannot get on foot.
The water changes colour abruptly as the bottom comes up. This is the moment people take out their phones.
The long stop, usually an hour or more. Swim, snorkel, and on the bigger boats slide off the deck.

The one thing to know
Everything else on this page is a preference. This one is geography. Comino is an island of about three and a half square kilometres with no cars, no asphalt roads and a permanent population of a handful of people. The Blue Lagoon is the channel between Comino and the uninhabited islet of Cominotto, and the only ways across it are a tour boat or the Comino ferry. There is no bridge, no causeway and nowhere to drive. That is why a boat tour in Malta is not a scenic extra: for this particular stretch of water it is the transport. It also explains why the departure port matters so much — Ġirkewwa at the northern tip is twenty minutes away and Sliema is close to an hour, and on a four-hour trip that difference is most of your swimming time.

Here is the thing that makes a boat tour in Malta different from a boat tour almost anywhere else: the place everybody is going to cannot be reached by land. Comino is an island of about three and a half square kilometres with no cars, no roads and a permanent population you can count on one hand. The Blue Lagoon is the channel between it and the smaller island of Cominotto. Every single person standing in that water arrived on a boat, because there is no other way to arrive.
Almost every listing goes to the same three places. The Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon around the headland, and the Santa Maria Caves in the Comino cliffs. What differs is the port you leave from, how long the crossing takes, how many people are on the deck, and whether there is a waterslide bolted to the back of it.
The port matters more than the price. Five ports appear on this page. Ġirkewwa at the northern tip is twenty minutes from Comino; Sliema is most of an hour. If you are staying in St Julian’s, a Sliema departure saves you a taxi; if you are in Mellieħa, Ġirkewwa gives you three more hours in the water. That is why this page sorts by port first.
The caves are the part people forget to check. Santa Maria Caves are cut into the cliff and only enterable from the water, and only by boats small enough to get in. The big catamarans cruise past the entrance; the small boats go inside. Both are honest; they are not the same trip.
August is a genuine consideration. The Blue Lagoon in high summer holds dozens of boats and thousands of people in a channel a couple of hundred metres wide. It is still beautiful and it is nothing like the photographs. May, June, September and October give you the same water with a fraction of the traffic.
And there is a completely different boat trip on this page. The ninety-minute harbour cruise from Sliema goes nowhere near Comino: it runs around Valletta, the Three Cities and the creeks, past fortifications built to be seen from exactly that angle. It is the cheapest thing here and the only one that is about history rather than water.

Most swim-stop trips stop running and the sea is cold. Harbour cruises around Valletta continue, and the Gozo ferries run all year.
Worth knowing
Choose the port before the price. Ġirkewwa is twenty minutes from Comino and Sliema is most of an hour. On a four-hour trip that is the difference between an hour in the lagoon and two.
Check whether the boat actually enters the caves. Santa Maria Caves are only enterable by boats small enough to fit. The big catamarans cruise past the entrance, which is not the same as going in.
There is no shade on most decks. Hat, shirt, proper sunscreen and more water than you think. Sunburn is the single commonest complaint in the reviews on every listing here.
Reef shoes are worth packing. The Blue Lagoon bottom is rock in places and the entry from the boat ladder is not a sandy beach.
Book the earliest departure you can. You get the lagoon before the rest of the fleet arrives, and in August that is the whole difference between the photographs and the reality.
