A full day on the water costs between $26 and $64 and takes most of a day. The question is fair, and the answer is unusually clear-cut: the place everybody is going to has no land route, so the boat is not a nicer way to get there. It is the only way.

Yes — the Blue Lagoon cannot be reached any other way. Comino has no roads, no cars and almost nobody living on it. What is genuinely worth deciding is which trip: the port, the size of the boat and the month matter far more than the price, and in August the lagoon is a very different place from the photographs.
What you are actually buying
The boat is not optional. Which boat is the real decision.
The first half of the question is easy. Comino is an island of about three and a half square kilometres with no surfaced roads, no cars and a permanent population of a handful of people. The Blue Lagoon is the channel between it and the uninhabited islet of Cominotto. There is no bridge, no causeway and nowhere to drive. A boat is the transport.
The second half is where people go wrong. Once you accept that you need a boat, the listings all look the same and they are not. A four-hour trip from Ġirkewwa gives you twice as long in the water as a four-hour trip from Sliema. A small boat enters the sea caves and a large one does not. A trip in June and the same trip in August are different experiences at the same price.
So the honest answer is: the boat is worth it, and which boat is worth thinking about for five minutes.
Who should skip it
It is not for everyone, and the site would rather say so.
The Blue Lagoon in high summer holds dozens of boats. Either book the first departure and a small boat, or spend the day on the Grand Harbour cruise instead.
The crossings are open water and the shorter the crossing the better. Ġirkewwa is twenty minutes; Sliema is close to an hour each way.
Comino has no facilities, no shade and no real beach. If you want sand and a bar, the northern bays of the main island are a better day out.
