What the money is actually buying
Port, boat size, hours, and whether it goes inside the caves.
The port. This is the biggest hidden variable. Ġirkewwa at the northern tip is about twenty minutes from Comino; Sliema is close to an hour each way. On a four-hour trip that difference is most of your swimming time, and it is not in the price.
The size of the boat. A two-hundred-person catamaran with a waterslide and a small boat with twelve people on it can cost within ten dollars of each other. They are not the same day, and neither is worse — but you should know which you bought.
The hours. Four hours, six hours, eight hours. The longer trips usually add Gozo or a third bay rather than more time in the Blue Lagoon.
Whether the boat fits in the caves. Santa Maria Caves are only enterable by smaller vessels. The big catamarans cruise past the entrance. That line is rarely in the title and always in the reviews.
What a Malta boat tour price does not include
None of them are hidden, and none of them are in the headline number.
A taxi from St Julian’s to Ġirkewwa is a real cost. Sliema and Valletta are on the bus network; Ġirkewwa is a longer trip.
Most boats sell both. A few of the longer trips include lunch, and the listing says so when they do.
There is no shade on most decks, and the on-board prices are what you would expect on a boat.
Landing on the island is free, but there is nothing on it: no shops beyond a couple of kiosks, no shade and no facilities to speak of.
Wind cancels trips. You are refunded, but a refund on your last morning is not a boat trip.
What a Malta boat tour costs against everything else on the island
Cheaper than the equivalent anywhere else in the Mediterranean, and it takes the whole day.
Against the ferry. The public ferry to Comino is cheaper than any Malta boat tour on this page, and it drops you on the island and leaves. No caves, no Crystal Lagoon, no coastline. For some people that is exactly right; for most it is not what they pictured.
Against a day on land. A Malta boat tour at $26 costs less than entry to several of the island’s museums combined, and takes the whole day.
Against the same trip elsewhere in the Mediterranean. A comparable Malta boat tour is noticeably cheaper than an equivalent day out of Mykonos, Capri or Dubrovnik, which is part of why the review counts here are so large.
Compare any two Malta boat tours by asking two questions: which port, and does it go inside the caves. The price rarely answers either of them.
